Large contemporary extension giving new look to a house
The owners wanted to take advantage of the spacious corner site, increasing the size of the existing house. The proposal increases a 925 sq. ft. 3-bed house into a 1,800 sq. ft. 5-bed property, whilst carefully respecting the scale of the plot and the rest of the street.
The extension added two bedrooms upstairs and almost doubled the size of the house, while sticking to a tight budget. The original openings were used in conjunction with a new feature chimney linking new to old.
The scheme also aspired to re-brand the house on a strict budget. This was achieved with a contemporary design using local vernacular materials. Ideas of prefabrication and other sustainable products were considered, as well as construction methods that would reduce the build time and hence the overall cost.
